Remembering Me

REMEMBERING ME

In the beginning – when I had just left – I had no idea who I was. I felt like two hundred cattle were standing on my chest, and it was difficult to breathe. Every day was a struggle and getting out of bed required inhumane strength. My mantra was “one foot in front of the other.” Days were arduous and punctuated with panic, anxiety, and pain that I had never experienced.

Then, as time went on, I began to hope and dream, and there were glimmers – little moments of joy perhaps where I remembered. The girl I was before all of this. The person who had dreamed and had laughed and who believed in good and happiness. Sometimes it was a smell – the jasmine when it sprung in Spring, or the sound of a turtle dove in the morning. I longed for the feeling of happiness and hope and excitement for the future.

Slowly, I began to rediscover the things that had brought me joy before. My sentimental belongings that I had treasured as a teenager, arranging flowers in a posy vase, a piece of music that had always inspired delight. A beautiful tea tray, the sound of a Westminster chime.

I had to remind myself of those pieces of light and hope that had stirred my heart before. I tried to remember the person I was before this all happened. The one who believed in the future and believed that she could do everything she set her mind on. I wrote a letter to her – apologizing for abandoning her at the door of a relationship that consumed her for sixteen years – that resulted in her losing all that was important – the most important being her soul.

Little by little, step by step, I began to find her again and ultimately do what I had to do – forgive her for what had happened and what she had allowed into her life. The deep understanding that she was only ever doing the best that she could.

Slowly, the journey back to me had begun, the thawing of years of sadness, regret, and deep unhappiness. I began to see her again – the person that had stood by me all the time – the person who ultimately saved me and led me back to me – because I am enough.
